This is one of my childrens’ breakfast favorites or even a quick desert. . I have to admit we have used it as a late night snack as well, don’t tell my wife. I like to use whole grain, or seven grain bread in this dish. The sweetness of the honey in the egg mixture really compliments the nuttiness of the bread. Also, the use of honey allows for the use of very little syrup, my wife doesn’t use the syrup at all on hers, she thinks it’s plenty sweet right out of the frying pan.
8 slices of whole grain, or seven-grain bread
1/2 stick butter, or margarine (I prefer the butter)
6 beaten eggs
2 tbl. spoons honey
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 cup syrup
Combine eggs, honey, and nutmeg to a bowl big enough to get your bread to lay flat in. Heat a frying pan over med high heat and melt enough butter or margarine in the pan to cover the bottom. Coat each slice of bread just before putting it into the frying pan. Cook on med high heat until golden brown in color on both sides. Repeat for all the slices of bread. Spread some butter of each slice and drizzle with a bit of your favorite syrup. I serve two slices per person, but I am often asked to make more.
Pretty much your every day french toast, however the honey, nutmeg and whole grain bread really transform this to a whole new level of deliciousness.
